Founded in 2004 by Greg Gliner and Kris Barney, the Miami University Investment Banking Club is establishing Miami as a premier source of talent for investment banks and financial institutions.
To drive placement at leading firms, the club is selective across member admissions, speakers, and sponsors. To drive legacy, MUIBC encourages continual involvement with Miami and the club as members graduate and advance in their careers.
Club Structure
MUIBC has two branches in which members participate: Investment Banking and Global Markets. Each branch encompasses its own unique framework, but both share common goals of professional and technical development.
Professional Development
Each semester the MUIBC hosts Guest Speaker Series, where highly successful finance professionals are invited to share their experiences and advice with the club. Additionally, each sophomore is paired with an upperclassman who has successfully navigated the investment banking recruitment process.
Recruitment Navigation
All MUIBC members going through recruitment are strongly encouraged to reach out to upperclassmen and schedule technical and behavioral 1-on-1s. The club also encourages coffee chats amongst members in order to cultivate a strong bond among members as a means to share advice, discuss ideas and develop strong friendships. The MUIBC Executive Board also provides opportunities to work with members on polishing their resumes and navigating IB recruitment.
New Member Education
All new members are enrolled in our well structured “challenge week” to ensure that all members have the requisite knowledge and resources to succeed in the IB recruitment process. The MUIBC education program covers key modules such as Financial Accounting, Discounted Cash Flow Analysis, Relative Valuation Methodologies, Equity and Enterprise Value, and Leveraged Buyout Analysis
Case Competitions
Each year, students evaluate a company's strategic alternatives, potential sale or acquisition options, and recommend a strategy to the management team. MUIBC primarily competes in the William Blair Case Competition and the Harvard University Global Case Competition.MUIBC students apply the technical and personal development skills they have learned in the club through to create presentations that demonstrate their understanding of the “winning-the-mandate” stage of the mergers & acquisitions process.
Finance Weeks
Each January, Finance students have two opportunities to network, learn and build their resumes — the Chicago Finance Week and Wall Street Week. These programs give students access to the fastest rising and most influential speakers and ideas in the financial world. Executives and Miami alumni from leading firms like Bank of America, William Blair, Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse interact with members on a personal level.
Stock Pitch Competitions
Stock pitch competitions provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate knowledge of the financial markets and to pitch an investment idea to industry professionals. The investment idea is evaluated as a long or short position with a 3–12 month investment horizon. Teams of 2–4 students put together stock pitch presentations and finalists present their ideas to the Cleveland Research Company. The winning team represents Miami University at a national level, competing against various universities, through the University of Michigan MII Intercollegiate Stock Pitch Competition.
