The Boston University Financial Modeling Club (BUFMC) is designed to teach students the basic operations of Microsoft Excel that they will be using in the real world. The objective of this club is to foster the development and technical understanding of financial modeling skills through software. In addition, the club strives to assist its members in developing skills required for recruiting and career enhancement purposes. This will help students gain a competitive advantage in their careers.
Peer Mentorship
BUFMC is offers one-on-one peer mentorship program headed by our Co-Vice Presidents of Mentorship and Recruitment. Accepted applicants into this program will be paired with a peer mentor. Each peer mentor has experience going through the recruiting cycle and has successfully landed an internship or full-time job opportunity within investment banking. Mentors provide you with additional support and guidance throughout your own process of applying to these prestigious firms. In addition to one-on-one mentoring, mentors cover material ranging from the technical to the behavioral aspects of the interview process, using their own personal experiences to give you a better understanding of what the recruiting cycle entails.
Weekly Meetings
BUFMC assists students throughout their career development process and supporting them on their journeys to securing an internship or job opportunity at the most reputable firms. In addition to weekly general member meeting where students learn how to build financial models using Excel, those admitted into the mentorship program will also have access to attend another meeting specifically tailored towards preparing students for the recruitment process involved for investment banking. During these educational meetings, our mentors will cover material ranging from the technical to the behavioral aspects of the interview process, using their own personal experiences to give you a better understanding of what the recruiting cycle entails.
Networking
Joining BUFMC’s mentorship program gives students special access to a growing network of BU alumni, who were once members of the BU Investment Banking Group, that are now currently working in various financial institutions. Admitted students will be invited to attend panels coordinated by Co-Vice Presidents of Mentorship and Recruitment to ask questions, learn from, and gain advice from alumni who have successfully completed the rigorous recruitment process, landing them at some of the most prestigious firms. During these events, students can not only network with guests who work in investment banking, but they also have the opportunity to connect with campus recruiters.
Tutor Team
Those who successfully complete all of the modules in the tutor program will be offered positions to join our full-time tutor team. All tutors are expected to attend each meeting and assist the VP of Tutoring with the creation of presentation materials. Tutors are responsible for answering questions general members may have about weekly content and guiding them through the models. Throughout the semester, tutors collaborate with the e-board to plan and execute special events for the future.
Events
BUFMC aims to help students gain a competitive advantage in the job application process through preparing them with the necessary technical skills beyond what the classroom can offer. The BUFMC teaches students a variety of topics throughout the year, such as financial statement analysis, data visualization, and regression analysis. In addition, there are multiple events each semester, including the annual Excel case conference and several networking and guest speaker events with alumni and industry professionals.
Executive Board
BUFMC recruits for executive board positions exclusively from the tutor team; any general members seeking to serve on our e-board must begin their journey by applying for the tutor program and being invited to serve as a full-time tutor. At the end of the academic year, tutors can shadow the e-board member in the role for which they intend to apply. Our e-board consists of the positions of President, Senior Vice President, VP of Operations, VP of Tutoring, Head Tutor, VP of Marketing, and VP of Community Relations. All members of our e-board work together to administer the club's daily operations, create course content, and plan for the future.
